On this day in 2014, a 24-hour general strike took place in Belgium to oppose proposed austerity policies that would raise the pension age, freeze wages, and cut public services. Despite the massive strike, the government imposed austerity.

Francisco Filho, better known as Chico Mendes, was a Brazilian rubber tapper and environmentalist union leader born on this day in 1944. After launching an anti-logging campaign, Mendes was murdered in 1988 by the son of a capitalist.
Giuseppe "Pino" Pinelli was an Italian railroad worker and anarchist who fell to his death on this day in 1969 while in police custody. His death became the subject of the play "Accidental Death of an Anarchist" by Dario Fo.

Sitting Bull (c. 1831 - 1890) was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader of indigenous resistance against U.S. settlers, killed by Indian Service police on this day in 1890 after 39 officers attempted to arrest him at his home.
