On this day in 1921, the first skirmishes of the Battle of Blair Mountain took place. More than 10,000 armed workers battled with state forces, making it the largest post-Civil War uprising and the largest labor uprising in U.S. history.

On this day in 1968, black bus drivers of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) began a two week strike that shut down nearly half of the city's bus routes, effectively paralyzing the south and west sides of the city.

On this day in 1996, in response to state-wide welfare cuts, poor Philadelphians, organized through the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU), began a 140-mile march from Philadelphia to Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania.
