38 Executed in Dakota War (1862)Dec 26th, 1862

On this day in 1862, the largest mass execution in U.S. history took place when 38 Dakota men were executed in Minnesota by the state as part of the Dakota War. The following year, the rest of the Dakota were expelled from the state.

Dover Mill Women's Strike (1828)Dec 26th, 1828

On this day in 1828, the first women's only strike in U.S. history took place when hundreds of Dover Mill workers walked out in protest of their working conditions, which included company housing, eleven hour days, and sexist wages.

Mao Zedong, born on this day in 1893, was a communist revolutionary and a founder of the People's Republic of China, which he governed as Chairman from 1949 until his death in 1976. "A revolution is not a dinner party...[it] is insurrection."

South Korean General Strike (1996-97)Dec 26th, 1996

On this day in 1996, more than 700,000 South Korean workers initiated a four-week general strike in response to a new anti-labor law passed quietly by the government. Workers won some amendments to the law the following February.
